Tekka Wet Market
Tekka Wet Market is at Little India, 665 Buffalo Rd, L1 Tekka Centre, Singapore 210665 with opening hours daily at 06:30 – 17:00. It was built in 1982 and closed for renovation in 2008, then it was reopened in 2009. This market has been a cleaner, a vibrant and colorful area in Singapore. It was giving a refreshing environment for shopping. Much like the Mustafa Centre, the Tekka Centre is one of those places you have to visit as an expat. Seasoned insiders will tell you there is no other place to shop for fruits, vegetables, meats and fish. They’ll tell you the quality is better, prices cheaper and experience is more "local.”
Today, because of hyper awareness of hygiene standards, most wet markets (like Tekka) no longer have live animals and are well maintained. Meats and fish are kept separate from fruits, vegetables and dry goods. The floors however remain wet and kind of icky, to be honest.
Tekka Market is a place for Singapore’s most culturally rich market. This is the most vibrant and colorful wet market where you will know more about Singaporeans and our way of living. There are various languages, from English to Hokkien, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. One can observe their unique way of life of ethnic communities with their culinary cultures, so this market is a place to learn more about life in Singapore.
Being the largest wet market in Singapore with 284 stalls, Tekka Market offers fresh produce and dry goods for all kinds of needs, almost everything you can find here. Here is where you can find even groceries that could hardly be found at other markets like shark fins. Usually Singapore’s wet markets close around noon, but Tekka Market has long operating hours as they are still open till late afternoon.
Many of the vendors are very friendly and knowledgeable and happy to answer questions about where the food is from and how to cook it. Almost universally, I found not only did the fruits and vegetables look better, but they tasted better. A few fruit vendors cut the fruit and let me sample before purchasing.
Tekka Market is considered as a one-stop destination where it has a wet market, a food court and a shopping area. One can buy grocery, have good foods, and do shopping without traveling around. Indian, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai and other cuisine cultures have fresh vegetables and herbs. This wetmarket has a huge and beautiful selection of Asian fresh produce. Tropical fruit are abundant where you can find pineapples, bananas, mangoes, jackfruits, rambutans, guavas, starfruit, longans, mangosteens, and durians.
Huge Sri Lanka crabs, prawns of all sizes, squid, tuna, salmon, mackerel, sea bass and a wide variety of crustaceans are also available here. Meat & poultry: mutton, lamb, goat, beef, pork, chicken and others are always on sales. There are Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and Thai spices and herbs are also available. Fresh flowers and pots are on special offer. Prices at Tekka Market are relatively competitive. Chicken, beef and fish are offered at better prices than others.
The big food court situated on the same level with the wet market is a good place to have breakfast, lunch or drinks when you are at Tekka Centre. As any hawker centres in Singapore, you can find usual Chinese, Western, Indian and Muslim food stalls at Tekka food court. Among those, Indian food stalls are the standouts. Chicken briyani, fish biryani, tandoori chicken, roti prata and ginger hot tea are highly recommended. If you don’t know what stalls offer good foods, just choose a long queuing line to join. In Singapore, long queue is often a sign of delicious foods.
